Paul Dickenson – Hammer/Discus

Member from 1964 – 71. British Junior Record Holder, 5 x English Schools Champion, 2 x AAA Junior Champion, UK Champion x 2, British and Commonwealth Record Holder – Hammer, Captain of GB and England Athletics Teams. Attended 2 Olympic and 2 Commonwealth Games, Northern Counties Youth and Junior Champion for Hammer and Discus.

Former National Event Coach for Hammer and now BBC commentator in Sport since 1988

I obviously know most of the things that I have done and am not that clear on my friends/team mates but I am sure the following will give you a flavour.

Ann Stevens
English schools competitor 4 times – hurdles and long jump - now married to Paul Dickenson

Bruce Fraser – 1960’s
Former English Schools and British Junior champion and record holder. British Senior International. Won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games for England in 1970

Chris Davison – 1960’s

Former English Schools Champion and British Junior International. Recently retired from Royal Air Force as an Air Vice Marshall

David Rogers – 1960’s

English Schools Champion. I think he was a member of the Northumbria Police Force until recently

Robert Rutherford – 1960’s

English Schools Champion

ALL OF THE ABOVE WERE PRINCIPLY HAMMER THROWERS FROM TYNEMOUTH TECHNICAL SCHOOL – NOW JOHN SPENCE -  UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF CARLTON JOHNSON WHO WAS HEAD OF  PE. HE SUBSEQUENTLY BECAME THE NATIONAL COACH FOR HAMMER AND A PRINCIPAL UK ATHLETICS COACH. AMONGST OTHER HE HAS COACHED WORLD RECORD HOLDER JONATHAN EDWARDS IN THE PAST AS WELL AS MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS LIST! HE STILL LIVES IN TYNEMOUTH.

Ian Chipchase

Hammer - English Schools Champion, British Junior Champion, British senior record holder, GB International and Commonwealth Champion in 1974. Still lives in Tynemouth. A huge tslent whose career was cut short by injury.

Dorothy Chipchase (nee Swinyard)
British senior international for Discus. Also a prominent Discus thrower. Still an active coach.

Arthur MacKenzie

Grew up in Sandringham Gardens in North Shields. Paul Dickenson lived in the house opposite to ‘Big Arthur’! British Junior and Senior Discus International as well as representing England at the Commonwealth Games in 1970. Since retiring from a very successful career with the police force has has enjoyed equal success as a writer/playwright. Still lives in Newcastle and still trains!

Shirley Webb

British Olympic representative in Hammer. After retiring became a TV Gladiator (Battleaxe)

Robin Littlefield

800 metres – English Schools Champion and British Junior Team. Career cut short by illness. Lives near Glasgow

Nick Brown

800 metres – English Schools Champion. Lives in the Bristol area and is now a successful coach.

Dave Lawrence

200 metres – Runner up in English Schools circa 1965 Lives in St Neots. His brother Peter became a successful Javelin thrower in the 70’s whilst a student at Loughborough College

Dave Harcombe

English Schools Champion for 100 yards (!!) in 1966 

Marion Fawkes

As a British International Race Walker she broke a world record during her career as well as a number of British Records. Marion's current profile and a list of her impressive achievements is listed here.

Maureen Armstrong

A walker who may well have been a british international too.

IN 1965 DICKENSON, MACKENZIE, FRASER, DAVISON, LAWRENCE, HARCOMBE & ARMSTRONG WON EIGHT NORTHERN COUNTIES TITLES BETWEEN THEM – THE GREATEST NUMBER OF ANY CLUB AND THE GREATEST NUMBER IN THE CLUB’S HISTORY – IS IT STILL A RECORD??
